Standing Side by Side: House of Sakinah Honors Victims at the Blacktown Community Vigil

On Thursday, 30 July 2026, representatives from the House of Sakinah Women Support Centre joined community members, advocates, and local organizations at Memorial Grove in Blacktown Showground for Side by Side: A Community Vigil.

Organized in partnership with the Outer West Domestic Violence Network (OWDVN), the evening provided a solemn, powerful space to reflect on the lives lost to domestic and family violence, honor their memory, and reinforce a collective commitment to building a safer community.

A Night of Reflection, Remembrance, and Hope

As dusk fell over Blacktown Showground, attendees gathered around Memorial Grove to light candles and observe a moment of silence. The glowing arrangementsβ€”including intricate heart-shaped candle outlines laid across the lawnβ€”served as a poignant reminder of both the lives impacted by family violence and the strength that comes when a community unites in purpose.

Events like these remind us that breaking the silence around domestic abuse is a shared responsibility. Standing shoulder to shoulder with neighboring organizations and community leaders sent a clear message: no one has to walk this road alone.

House of Sakinah’s Ongoing Commitment

For over a decade, House of Sakinah has worked on the front lines in Western Sydney, providing crucial support, crisis accommodation, and resources for women and children escaping domestic violence or experiencing hardship.

Participating in community events like the Side by Side vigil is a core extension of that mission. Beyond immediate support, creating long-term safety requires:

  • Raising awareness across diverse community groups.
  • Advocating for survivors and ensuring culturally sensitive care is available.
  • Collaborating with local networks like OWDVN to strengthen regional safety nets.

How You Can Help

Creating a community free from domestic violence requires active participation from all of us. Here is how you can support the cause:

  1. Break the Silence: Talk openly about respectful relationships with family and peers.
  2. Support Local Services: Donations and volunteer support help frontline centers continue providing emergency relief and housing.
  3. Know Where to Seek Help: If you or someone you know is in need of support, confidential help is available.
